Tiramisu

There's a tale that goes with this cake. It was said that a young man was off to fight the war and his wife had not prepared anything for him to take. So she put together whatever she could find around the house (eggs, cheese, ladyfingers, cocoa, expresso, marsala) and resulted with a cake like this. Her husband ate it and left for war. This is only one of many stories of the origins of Tiramisu, and the version that I quite like. Tiramisu, directly translated, means 'pick me up' or 'come with me', and I'm not quite sure why.

A definate cake to have on a special occassion. For now, I'd like to dedicate this to mum: Happy Birthday Mama
